Local nurse Alison Hartley from Hathersage has responded to an appeal by leading infertility expert Professor Robert Winston to join a tough, women only cycling challenge to India to raise funds to improve the health of women and babies.
Alison is joining Women for Women Cycle India and will cycle 425kms in a bid to raise funds for the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Trust's Women for Women Appeal. She needs to raise a minimum of £2,700 to fund groundbreaking medical research work at a new research centre in London and she is asking local people and companies to help her reach her target.
Funds will train women scientists and clinicians to work at the centre, empowering more women to work in this field. They will work to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of devastating conditions, which cause genetic diseases, miscarriage, infertility and cancer. The fundamental aim is to improve women's health and to ensure that more women have a normal pregnancy with a healthy baby.
The sixth Women for Women cycling challenge will take place from 25th Nov - 5th Dec 2006. The group will cycle for five days on mixed terrain through the exotic and colourful Rajasthan region, often called the land of Kings. The ride starts near Agra and finishes in Jaipur.
Alison, who works at Thornhill House Nursing Home in Great Longstone, is known locally for her work in the Hope valley as a community midwife, and for her fundraising efforts for Hathersage Playing Field Association. and Hathersage Primary School. Now with three great boys, she is dedicating this challenge to her daughter Lucy and neighbour Max Mason, both stillborn with no apparent cause.
Fundraising is going well with support from family, friends and the local community. She particularly wishes to thank Hathersage Toddler Group for their continuing support and huge fundraising efforts that are much appreciated.
To pledge your support to Alison either post your sponsorship donation, made payable to The Institute Trust Fund, to her at Broom Cottage, the dale, Hathersage, telephone her on 01433 651830 or email to ali.hartley@hotmail.co.uk Every penny donated will be going directly to Women for Women as all costs have been covered.

April 29th starting at 10.30 at the same venue. If you have anything you wish to donate to these two events please contact Alison at the above number.
